Keep a Consistent Sleep Schedule

Sleep, sleep, sleep! We’re officially giving you, the student, permission to SLEEP! Enough with the late and sleepless nights. You may think you’re doing better by cramming and studying but your brain is just sitting with information on the surface. Nothing is being absorbed. When you sleep, the time you spend resting does not mean your brain is turned completely off. It takes this time while you’re resetting, to file away information you’ve given it through the day. Repetitive info with lots of rest daily will push you further than loads of info in one day and now sleep.

When in doubt, SNACK

It’s snack time. All the time. Ever gotten to the middle of a study session and none of the words make any sense any more? Everything runs together and it’s all just a blur. It may be time for a study break and a snack. You perform better when you’re fueled better…while full meals tend to make us a bit sleepy, smaller snacks through the day help us maintain our blood sugar levels and fuel our brain for the mental work ahead.

Take a Walk

When you’re heated or too emotional, we often tell people to take a walk to calm down. The same goes during a study session. Usually, students are trying to retain large amounts of info at one time and the brain can get overloaded. Take a minute to step away and let your brain focus on something else for a little while. A 10-15 minute is not going to tank you grade, we promise. It’s good for you to step back from things you’ve been working on too long to get a better perspective and let your mental and physical health decompress a little.

A little goes a long way

Bit by bit. Like we said earlier, your brain does better in little bits of information instead of large loads. Have you ever tried to remember all the directions of a road trip 5 minutes before going on the trip? Nope. Doesn’t really work well. But if you review materials 10-15 minutes a day, or even just once a week to re-read notes from your classes…in the long run, your brain will be able to retain the information better because of how often and how consistently it has had time to learn it…not because you showed it to your brain right before testing your brain.

Practice, Practice, Practice

Practice tests can be helpful – especially when it comes to longer term testing like the ACT or SAT. They’re not fun to do on your off days or in the afternoons, but if you have more time to review the format and get used to the pressure and timing for standardized testing, the better off you’ll be. You know what they say, practice makes perfect.
